Light Fitting and Ceiling Fan Services
I highly recommend that you make use of my Job Suitability Survey Service before buying any new Light Fitting or Ceiling Fan as this will allow us to discuss what you are looking for, the best way to achieve it and avoid potential issues before you spend money on things.
For Ceiling Fans there are requirements for height and gaps around blades. There should be 2.1m - 2.4m (7ft - 8ft) minimum between the blades and the floor for safety reasons. If blades are too close to the ceiling you may not get proper airflow. There should also be a minimum of around 50cm (20 inches) between the blades and any obstructions such as walls. Larger blades need more clearance.
Whilst there is a minimum height to floor recommendation I must also say I previously installed a fan above my own bed and many people do. You obviously have to be careful not to get things in the way of the blades when the fan is on! A lower profile fan with blades closer to the ceiling may help pose less risk of injury but may be less efficient at circulating air.
It is also worth noting that due to the weight of fans then they will need the support of being fixed in to joists in the ceiling and that may not necessarily be where your light fitting is currently.
One of the more tricky bits of Ceiling Fan installation can be eliminating ‘wobble’. Some fans come with a balancing kit whilst others don’t. This is definitely something to bear in mind when choosing which fan to buy.
Light Fittings such as pendant lights should also not come down too low in to the room ... tall people will keep hitting them as they walk under them otherwise. Definitely worth planning for!
If you are replacing light fittings that have standard bulbs with dimmable bulbs, or require other changes to switches then that can all be done as well. For example if you have two lights in a room controlled by one switch I can change that to a separate switch for each light.
Of course any electrical work will need me to isolate the power for that circuit so it is safe to work on.
Installing / Replacing Light Fittings and Ceiling Fans costs will always depend on the complexity of the job. The more complex fittings with dimmers and Ceiling Fans with lighting built in are more involved to fit and will therefore cost more.
Light fittings and ceiling fans vary in size and footprint on the ceiling and changing them may leave holes or unfinished paintwork around a new fitting where the old fitting used to be. In this case I will do my best to fill holes and at least make the area blend with the existing ceiling surface where possible as part of the service.
